From the the beginning of the JOGGING Era to today's road races, running or road race medicine has evolved into a serious component of the sport of competitive road racing. ARA's founder, the late LtGen Richard Bohannon helped usher in the Jogging movement and the growth of community road races. Today's marathons embody some of the best practices in running medicine that are due in large measure to the members of ARRMS. Medical care and treatment has become one of the large parts of race day operations.
HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN ROAD RACE MEDICAL SOCIETY
The American Road Racing Medical Society (ARRMS) was formed in October 2003 as a division of the American Running Association (ARA) and will serve the road racing community in North America as an educational resource and medical authority for road races from the 5K distance up through the ultra distances. ARRMS is the result of a vision of Bill Roberts, M.D., the Twin Cities Marathon Medical Director, Life Member of American Medical Athletic Association (AMAA), and the immediate-Past President of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Over the past two years, ARRMS has established officers and a mission and goals for road racing medical professionals. Its’ first major event will be the World Congress: Science and Medicine of the Marathon produced andhosted by the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon (for more see Events). Dr Roberts envisions that ARRMS will serve all medical professionals who work and/or volunteer at all sized road races. ARRMS will serve to educate the running industry, race organizers and the public about medical issues that impact the sport of running and road racing |
